How can I get to heaven?

In the Bible, a rich young man asked Jesus how he could inherit eternal life. Jesus told him exactly what he needed to do.

Obey God

Jesus said to him, if you want to enter life, keep the commandments: [1]

  • Do not murder
  • Do not commit adultery
  • Do not steal
  • Do not lie
  • Honour your father and mother
  • Love your neighbour as yourself

Trust God

Then Jesus said to him, Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. [2].

This was too much for the young man because he was very wealthy.

Later, Jesus said to His disciples, Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! [3].

It is easy to say to God, 'I do not need You,' when you are wealthy and all your needs are met. Some people can only learn to depend on God when they have lost everything.

Trust and obey

God is good, and if we are to live with Him, we need to learn to be good too. We should find out what pleases Him and obey His commandments.

But we also need to trust Him. God is perfect, and all of us have fallen short. We have lied, taken things that were not ours, and hated people in our hearts. Some of us have done much worse things.

Because of this, we cannot rely on our own good deeds to get us to heaven. We need God's forgiveness for the wrong things we have done, and we need to trust Him that He has a way to forgive us.

If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [4]
